Jewish Bucharest

Choral Temple

Str. Sf. Vineri 9
Tel: 312 21 96
Sadly one of the only buildings intended for the (once significant) Jewish community left in Bucharest. Built in 1857, the red brick temple still serves the community and has a memorial at the front (visible from the street) that commemorates the massive amount of Romanian Jews that were sent to their deaths during WW2. Services are held everyday at 08:00 and 19:00, Sat 08:30 and 19:00.

Jewish Cemetery

Calea Serban Vodă
Plenty of harrowing and stark monuments to those who died as a result of the pogroms and mass exterminations. You really ought to stop by and pay your respects. Open from noon to dusk

Jewish History Museum

Str. Mămulari 3
Tel: 311 08 70
Thu: 09:00-16:00
Fri: 09:00-13:00
Sat: Closed
Sun: 09:00-13:00
Plenty of exhibits showing how it was for the once vibrant Jewish community all under the roof of an old synagogue built in 1850. The main display piece is a sculpture that mourns the 150,000 or so Jews that were sent to hard-labour camps in Transdniestr (now in the Republic of Moldova) as well as the 200,000 Transylvanian Jews who were sent to their deaths at Auschwitz in 1944 and 1945 (Nobel prize-winning writer Elie Wiesel was one of the few survivors of this late deportation).

Ohel Sara Institute

Stefan Mihăileanu 28b, ap. 3
Whether you're Jewish or just interested in the Jewish faith and culture, Rabbi Rabbi Eli Kaufman will happily ask you to join him for a Sabbath dinner and lunch if you contact him.

Yeshoah Tova Synagogue

Str. Tache Ionescu 9
In a busy side street going towards Piata Amzei from Magheru is a grey and somewhat unkempt-looking synagogue that is the only other functioning one in the city apart from the Choral Temple. Services take place at the hour the Sabbath starts on Friday evenings as well as on Saturdays at 09:00.
