Calea Dorobantilor 5-7 (Howard Johnson Grand Plaza)
Tel: 201 50 30

If ever you had second thoughts about trying a restaurant in a hotel, this wonderful place will do away with all of your doubts, for this contemporary restaurant in the Howard Johnson Grand Plaza is quite simply one of the city's finest dining rooms. The Euro-Asian fusion menu is a joy of creation, with most dishes being built on a foundation of simple, clear flavours. Highly recommended. Open Mon-Fri 07:00-10:30; Sat, Sun 07:00-11:00; Mon-Sat 12:00-15:00; Sun 12:00-16:00; Mon-Sun 19:00-23:00.

Str. Dumbrava Rosie 2

Fashionable restaurant serving French-Asian cuisine to Bucharest's smart set. The lounge-style décor is tasteful, and the staff efficient. The ever-changing menu – check for the insert containing details of the daily specials - betrays the presence of real genius in the kitchen. Expect to pay justifiably high prices.

Calea 13 Septembrie 90 (JW Marriott Grand Hotel)
Tel: 403 19 03
This is the JW Marriott's flagship restaurant, and it is simply superb. Based on Californian/Pacific Rim cooking disciplines whereby every nation's cuisine is fused into a beautifully sculptured treat, it is reminiscent of Vong restaurant in the Hong Kong Mandarin Hotel, which is generally considered by the international media to be the best eatery in the world. Super, go for it.

Str. Eremia Grigorescu 17
Tel: 211 36 46
All the dishes on Esperanto's menu (which changed in January, and will continue to change on a regular basis) are very good, and are all served up in a small, charming and coquette locale which is perfect for small groups of friends. The quality of food at Esperanto gets even better when the owner (who really knows his food, and indeed writes restaurant reviews for a Romanian daily newspaper) is in the kitchen. You will adore the impractical ashtrays.

Str. Petre Cretu 63

Moods is the first restaurant cooking and serving some genuine Thai food to hit Bucharest for quite some time. Congratulations all round on a wonderful job: the food is not perfectly Thai (a lack of ingedients is to blame here, not the chef) but better than most served in this town. A small but well formed menu also features non-Thai, fusion dishes, including an excellent honey-topped fried cod. A place to be tried.

Str. Dianei 9

Another fusion restaurant hits Bucharest, this time an affair sporting a chef who formally worked at the Hilton. Things start well as three types of bread are served as you take your seat and look at the small but inventive menu. Things then get even better as dish after dish hits the mark. Quality is high, and prices pretty low. They will do well.
